San Vicente and Federal. Resolved for Now.

Background: For seven years, a homeless encampment existed outside the VA Fence in Brentwood, West Los Angeles. It grew to over 200 people, and fostered criminal activity including two murders. It was located at San Vicente and Federal. In November of 2021, residents were rehoused in supportive situations, many on the VA campus. For several years, the area remained clear.

In January, 2023 a second encampment emerged beginning with one tent and increasing rapidly to 45 residents and numerous tents. This was problematic in our neighborhood, no matter where we resided in Brentwood. After a six month struggle, finally, in late September 2023, the remaining individuals in this second camp were rehoused.

Yes, these major encampments are gone, but there is an ongoing need to move newly arriving transients to supportive housing. At Homeless Action of Brentwood - simply an informal group of neighbors - we have joined together to address the problem. We would be happy to share the simple ways you can help.

What Can You Do? And Why Should You Do It?

  1. Contact the Sheriff’s Department and request action - this is their area of responsibility. Public attention makes an enormous difference in responses. We will supply you with contact information. And let us know what transpires - we will follow up.

  2. Also email HAOB. Using our community contacts, we will work to find compassionate and timely solutions. As we have seen, encampments grow from small beginnings.
